Melbourne is full of historic vineyards, wineries and breweries, based both in and around the city. Wine tasting is usually widely available at the city's numerous vineyards and many offer courses about general wine appreciation and demonstrations, where you can observe the whole winemaking process, from grape to actual bottle.Many of Melbourne's vineyards are famous throughout the world, producing some of the most highly regarded Australian wines. The scenic Geelong region was one of the most important wine-growing areas in Victoria during the 19th century and is still well-known for its superb Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir wines. Macedon, close to Melbourne, remains one of Victoria's most important winemaking areas and is popular for tours and exploration, with around 12 small, charming vineyards with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Yarra Valley is within easy reach of Melbourne city and remains one of the most respected wine-producing regions in Australia, with many impressive wineries. Highly regarded for its excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and sparkling 'Methode Champenoise' wines. The Mornington Peninsula area, close to Melbourne, has recently become one of the major wine-producing regions in the area. Most noted for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz wines, Mornington Peninsula has a number of world-class vineyards in the elevated central area around Main Ridge and Red Hill.Guided tours provide one of the best ways to see the most popular wineries in the Melbourne area and many of the vineyards also have restaurants, picnic areas, barbecue facilities and some even provide basic accommodation.
