Founded in the middle of the 19th century, with just 16 students and four professors, the University of Melbourne has become one of the finest educational institutions in Australia. With a vast campus spread over this part of Victoria, the university now boasts in the region of 50,000 students and some 3,600 academic staff, concentrating on many different areas of study and often leading the way in both research techniques and findings.
The campus remains an important and integral part of life in the city and over the years has contributed to the wealth and prosperity of Melbourne. The grounds have open lawns and gardens, and during semesters, Melbourne University is a lively place, with many events, concerts and festivals throughout its calendar.
There are also excellent sports facilities here, with numerous resident sports clubs, such as athletics, tennis, swimming, rugby and Australian Rules Football.
Melbourne's other two universities are located around a 30-minute drive from the city centre. Monash University is situated on Wellington Road in the Clayton district, while La Trobe can be found in the Bundoora area.
